Vilebrequin pétanque pitch, 2022, Hyères
The pétanque pitch, or the creation of the place that defines it. Inspired by the very origins of architecture, by the first chalk line drawn by masons, the pétanque area created for Vilebrequin is a whole experience. Endeavouring to give meaning to all forms of creation, the bowls players are made fully aware of the delimitation of the playing space. Portable, the designed object makes it possible to set up a temporary pitch whenever the mood takes. Much as a builder would, you pull the plane handle, release the string from the four aluminium corner posts, and set about marking out the rectangle that defines the area. By focussing attention on this first act, which becomes truly ceremonial, Edgar Jayet gives the line its full symbolic value, a reminder that in front of our very eyes, a space is made.
