Peintures sur chevalet, dépeindre les Calanques, 2022, Paris
Edgar Jayet collaborated with artist Victor Fleury Ponsin on this carte blanche installation proposed by fashion store American Vintage. Together, they designed Peintures sur chevalet, dépeindre les Calanques (‘Easel Paintings, depicting the Calanques’): an exhibition in the American Vintage store in Paris. A commissioned piece, Peintures sur chevalet pays tribute to the Mediterranean creeks, les Calanques. While Victor Fleury Ponsin considers the immortality of rock through a sculptural approach and creative work around stone, Edgar Jayet designs a collection of furniture inspired by that used by outdoor painters in the 19th century.
Alternating between rapid open-air sketches and more detailed work in the studio, artists needed equipment that was highly practical. Drawing on the portability and rudimentary nature of this equipment, Edgar Jayet designed easels, supports and stands, as practical as they are aesthetic. Designed in three kinds of wood, beech, sycamore and pear, the pieces are designed to then be used by the boutique in the spirit of re-use and continuity.
